  • Climbing up and spilling over February 21, 2012
Plants that climb to the sky and and plants that spill to the earth are very dramatic performers in the garden and some of my favorite flora to incorporate into a space. Climbers transform a space like nothing else as they draw the garden visitors eye up, transforming the entire garden picture. Spillers soften hard edges […]
  • The water lilies are alive! They’re alive! February 10, 2012
Hardy water lilies are an investment plant, usually running between $30 and $50 a plant at the nursery or garden center. With that in mind, overwintering them is a wonderful way to build your lily collection and conserve your garden funds. I peeked at my overwintering lilies this week, and they are all showing new […]
  • I’m thinking of clematis a lot lately as we look to planting time February 9, 2012
Whatever you are looking for in a perennial flowering vine, there is a clematis to help you out. Most require as much sun as possible, consistent watering, and cool roots. Planting a 12 to 18 inch plant at the base of the clematis will accomplish this. Clematis need a little lateral help to reach their […]
  • Fake force your Paperwhite bulbs December 19, 2011
Paperwhites (Narcissus papyraceus) are cousins of daffodils and are a common bulb to force in the Christmas season. Actually, forcing bulbs has always seemed so violent a term to me. How about if we say coaxing bulbs? Well, I purchased my paperwhites already potted, with the little buds already heading north. This is a wonderful […]
  • Oh, favorite annuals of mine. Won’t you come in and spend the winter with me? November 3, 2011
If you garden, you can’t help but to pick up a few favorite plants along the way. This is a sweet experience when that favorite plant is a perennial. You let it slumber through the winter months, knowing it will emerge well-rested and stronger next spring. You hope the same for yourself. When your favorite […]

About

Hello!

I started Garden Drama about 12 years ago as gardening grew into a major force in my life… powerful, euphoric, life-changing even, but mostly a whole lot of fun. I love to see everyone participate in this favorite obsession, on any level, from a windowsill potted plant to acres of woods. There is power in plants.

I garden on a city lot in Minneapolis, so I have a special love of urban farming and small space gardening. I grew up on a 165 acre farm, so I love that type of dirt-digging as well, though most of us are probably more inclined towards the former.

I started writing for the beloved Minnesota gardening treaure Northern Gardener magazine in the 1990s. Throughout the years I have reported on many topics and I currently cover local gardeners and their beloved obsessions in the regular column “Obsessions”.

Along the way, I began speaking to state-wide gardening groups, clubs, and organizations on topics including: water gardening, container gardening, vegetable gardening, art in the garden, and gardening in a small space. This is a beloved activity, connecting with my gardening “peeps” and also allows me to utilize my 20+ years in the theatre. (But that is a whole other story! Talk about DRAMA!) I am a former Hennepin County Master Gardener, but a current Pasionate Gardener, so to speak.

My love of all things gardening has grown into my garden art business, creating clay sculpture, paintings, and other garden art oddities. T-shirts, too.

As you may have gathered, I think gardening can have dramatic effects in your life.
